Slipper sale at Angkor Wat will save the stones

Apsara Authority confirmed the new fees would be set at US$23 for a day pass, US$43 for three days and US$63 for a week. Tickets holders are given an Angkor guidebook to assist them in viewing the temples.

Assigned to oversee the temples, Apsara Authority will also demand that all tourists shed their shoes and wear cotton slippers priced at US$1 a pair. The move should reduce wear and tear of the stone pavements in the Angkor temple, although travel agents point out that Apsara will benefit financially substantially from sale of slippers.

The shoes can only be used on the day of purchase. Tourists visiting the sites for a second or third day will be required to buy slippers for each day.

First Travel Cambodia managing director, Tui Rutten said she was concerned about the trash, which will increase with the daily purchase of throw-away slippers. She also stressed that tourists? safety could be compromised if the shoes are faulty or of a poor quality.
Local guide in Siem Reap, Riel Chantakna, who visits the Angkor temples daily agrees that the slippers are a good way to preserve heritage but they claim Apsara should absorb the charge.

?Right now, there are eight pavilions established to allow visitors to change slippers but I am not sure about security or whether lockers will be provided for the shoes left behind,? Mr Riel pointed out.

Angkor welcomes 700,000 visitors a year or approximately 60,000 a month. More than 90% of tourists visit the historical sites.
Apsara Authority has been asked by donor organisations and banks that fund projects in Siem Reap to channel back revenue into the local economy, fund conservation and garbage collection.
There are also demands that a more transparent position be adopted to show how tourism revenue generated at the sites is used to improve the community as opposed to benefiting a small elite group of powerful citizens.

Angkor TK Travel and Tour manager, Witcha Srisuwan said the new rules would be confusing tourists and will be very inconvenient especially when it rains.

แล้วถ้าใช้รองเท้าผ้าฝ้ายมันจะขาดง่ายอะเปล่าคะ เป็ดใช้แค่ครึ่งวันคงต้องทิ้งแล้วคะ พกไปเองได้เปล่าคะ เอารูปมาให้ดูหน่อยซิคะ
